An interview is a chance for a potential employer to see if you are the right fit for their new role and for you to also see if the company is right for you. It can be a nerve-racking ordeal and so here is our advice to get you interview-ready.

Preparing for the interview
  • Do your research – look at the company website so you fully understand the services and/or products they offer as well as their business goals for the future
  • Revisit the job description in the application pack to remind yourself of the skills and qualities the employer is looking for. Prepare some examples to demonstrate you match these.
  • Think about the questions the employer may ask you and ask a friend or family member to run through them
  • If you have been asked to give a presentation have a practice run
  • Make a note of some questions you would like to ask – it’s okay to have a notebook at hand it shows you are prepared and have thought about the role
  • Have your chosen outfit ready for the day and ensure you are comfortable
  • Do you know where you are going? Check any transport times so you are not late on the day
During the interview
  • Take some deep breaths to help calm any nerves
  • Turn your phone off fully
  • Be confident when you meet your potential employer and don’t forget to smile!
  • If you don’t understand a question don’t be afraid to ask for a further explanation
  • If you’ve had difficult experiences turn them into something positive by showing how you learnt from them
  • Ask questions about the company i.e. opportunities to progress and train rather than holiday and salary
  • At the end of the interview don’t forget to thank the employer for their time

After the interview

If you don’t get offered the job, ask for feedback and use this opportunity to learn and prepare for further interviews.
